His themes come from his personal interactions with its urban milieu - its sickness and sordidness, its violence and vulnerability and all that compounds its existential agony. In the 1960s and 1970s his work was influenced by the turbulence and political violence of Kolkata.

Sri Debashis Sen is the honourable Principal Secretary of the Department of Urban Development, Govt of West Bengal. He is also the Chairman of WBHIDCO and Convenor of the Task Force Committee for Rabindra Tirtha. Sri Sen is an IAS of West Bengal Cadre of IAS batch of 1985. Before taking charge of Urban Development Department, Sri Debashis Sen had carried important roles in various sectors for the state administration. He had played a remarkable role as the Chief Election Commissioner of West Bengal. He was also the Managing Director of WBPDCL.
